Bio

In Mark’s own words:

I am a ninth-generation north Floridian, with the first of my ancestors arriving in Florida nearly 250 years ago as indentured servants. One of those ancestors, Antonio Mavromatis, was part of a group that comprised some of the first Greeks to come to America. Antonio married a young woman from Minorca, Spain, whose name was Francisca Llabres. Together they survived brutal conditions at the New Smyrna sugar plantation and a period of enslavement, and then found the courage to fight to free themselves in order to seek a better life, and did so, settling in St. Augustine in the 1780’s.

My family also has deep roots in Jacksonville and Duval County. Some of my family, whose names were Hartley, Hood, Plummer, Acosta, Flynn, and Hagan, were among the pioneer settlers of Duval County. Later, my grandfather and father both owned and operated a wholesale grocery and ship chandler business in downtown Jacksonville – a business that supplied tug boat lines, shipyards, steamship lines and other maritime businesses. From elementary school through high school, I worked at my dad’s grocery store on Talleyrand Avenue. My dad also had a luncheonette there, so I did everything from waiting on tables, running the cash register, to butchering meat, to delivering groceries and supplies to tug boats. I value the tremendous heritage of perseverance, self-reliance, hard work and faith those Florida pioneers have passed on to me.

First and foremost – I am a Christian, a sinner saved by grace, and my faith and belief in Jesus Christ shape all that I am and all that I do. I am a native of District 12, having grown up in the Sans Souci neighborhood of Southside, and graduated from Englewood High School and the University of North Florida. Among other things, I have been an interim youth pastor, a small restaurant owner, and for the last 23 years, I have owned and operated a successful law practice in the areas of probate, family estate planning, real estate and small businesses representation.

Why am I running?  The answer is simple: I love my hometown of Jacksonville, I love Florida and I love my children, and am concerned for all their futures.  I want to fight to preserve the best of what we have been given, what we know works and what we know is good – all the while seeking to make to positive changes to what we know isn’t working – for small businesses, parents, students and for all citizens – in order to help make Jacksonville and Florida the best they can be – not only for ourselves, but more importantly, for our children.
